A FORMER mayor of Doncaster and well-respected educator has died.

Edith Plumb, 90, dedicated her life to education and also became the town’s mayor back in the 1970s.

After retiring as a primary school headteacher, Miss Plumb joined the governing body at Balby Carr School, serving for 20 years. She was chair of governors before stepping down in July 2000. She died on January 28 of this year.

Julia Cotterill, the current chair of governors, said: “Edith Plumb gave all her life to education. She always had her finger on the pulse of what was happening in school and in the community.”

Civic mayor Coun Eva Hughes said: “As civic mayor of Doncaster I am honoured pay my respects at the funeral of Alderman Edith Plumb.

“As the representative of the people of the town, I am proud to acknowledge the achievements of this remarkable lady who served Doncaster for 18 years and became the Mayor in 1972.
