A man who was pursued by police through the Isle has been jailed for 28 months for offences including assault by beating.

Sam Powell (21) from Winterton, was picked up as he drove his vehicle on the M18 in South Yorkshire in January.

A woman had visited Scunthorpe police at around 7.40pm on January 9 to report that a man she knew had threatened her while holding a knife, at her home address.

The man had left the Scunthorpe property in a blue and silver coloured Mitsubishi Shogun.

At around 9.07pm officers on the ground, supported by the police helicopter, pursued the car from Winterton as it made its way along the M180 and onto the M18.

Once on the M18, Humberside Police were joined by South Yorkshire officers and used a stinger to stop the car by deflating its tyres at junction three. Two South Yorkshire police vehicles were damaged by the Mitsubishi.

Driver Sam Powell was arrested by officers and taken into custody at Scunthorpe Police Station.

Mr Powell of Queen Street, Winterton was charged on January 10 with the following offences:

* Driving a motor vehicle dangerously on the M180 and M18.

* Driving whilst disqualified

* Driving with no insurance

* Failure to stop for police officers

* Aggravated vehicle taking

* Assault by beating

* Possession of a bladed article in a public place

* Communication conveying a threatening message

He appeared at Grimsby Crown Court on March 21 and was handed a 28 month prison sentence.
