Mystery surrounds an incident in Barnsley which left a man fighting for life.
The 33-year-old, who has not been named, suffered life threatening injuries and was in a critical condition in hospital yesterday.
A South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said an investigation is under way to try to establish how the man sustained his injuries.
Officers cordoned off Rotherham Road, from the junction with Pontefract Road to the Hope public house, while officers examined the area yesterday.
Forensic experts in white suits were at the scene, which was under police guard.
An orange transit van was inside the cordon, with passers-by claiming it appeared to have been involved in a collision.
A South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: “Police are investigating an incident that is believed to have occurred at around 10.30pm on Tuesday on Rotherham Road in Barnsley.
“A 33-year-old man sustained life threatening injuries and is currently in hospital in a critical condition.
“Officers are making enquiries this morning to ascertain the circumstances of the incident.
“Anyone who believes they may have information or may have witnessed anything in the area is asked to call the police.”
