A HISTORIC pub is to receive a top accolade from real ale fans after its landlord is returning it to its ‘former glory’.
Members of the Doncaster branch of the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) will gather at the White Swan today
The hostelry is the last of 19 pubs that used to be located in French Gate, Doncaster town centre, before they were gradually demolished for redevelopment schemes.
It had been renowned at one time for having the tallest bar in England, which was in the front taproom, although that was removed several years ago by a previous licensee.
The premises went through several changes after the death of well-known landlord Bryn Todd in 1999 but have been revived by Francie Marron, who used to run the Hogshead and Horse and Groom in the town centre.
An enthusiastic supporter of real ale, he has been serving the locally-brewed Glentworth beer as well as Black Sheep Bitter and his prices are lower than most pubs.
Martin Clark, CAMRA official, said: “We owe Francie a huge debt for restoring the White Swan to its former glory and for promoting locally brewed ale at such a favourable price.
“The Pub of the Season award also reflects the hard work of the friendly and efficient Nikki Steele, who has managed the pub, including the all-important cellar duties, on a day to day basis.”
The new owners have also extended the White Swan’s opening hours to 10am to 11pm Monday to Thursday and until midnight on Friday and Saturday.
The other good news is that Mr Marron plans to re-instate the tall bar and hopes regulars and readers might have old photographs of how it once looked.
