DRIVERS are advised to find alternative routes after a chemical spill has closed the M1 motorway.

The M1 is fully closed in both directions between junctions J32 and J33.

The link from the M18 southbound to the M1 northbound is also fully closed due to this incident.

A diversion is in operation for all traffic in both directions.

Northbound traffic should join the M18 northbound at M1 J32 and then use this to join the A1(M) northbound.

Southbound traffic should exit at J33 and follow the “black triangle” symbol using the A630 southbound to join the A57 eastbound and rejoin the M1 at J31.

Emergency services are attending a spillage of waste materials from a lorry heading northbound on the M1.

The initial call came just after 10.30am, with police and firefighters arriving to find the lorry located between J32 and 33 northbound, before the entry slip road from the M18.

Four fire engines and two support units are in attendance.

Emergency services’ first priority was to identify the type of waste materials involved and assess the risk to the public. A small number of people who have come into direct contact with the waste are being washed with water but there is not believed to be any risk to any other member of the public.

A 100 metre safety cordon is in place as a precaution but drivers who believe they may have driven past the incident, through the waste, are not believed to require any treatment whatsoever.

The road is currently closed to allow the waste to be completely cleared from the area, and ongoing assessments are being made as to when it can be reopened.
