A lone campaigner fighting for Mexborough has proved to be the shock result of this year’s Doncaster Council election.

Andy Pickering, fighting under the banner “Working for Mexborough, The Forgotten Town,” seized the seat from Labour by 120 votes.

An emotional Mr Pickering said: “I can barely speak. This is a brilliant result and sends out a messsage that the electorate of Mexborough cannot be taken for granted by Doncaster Council.

“Our town has been neglected by Doncaster for many years. I now intend to ask awkward questions that other councillors are not prepared to ask.”

UKIP failed to match national successes, although did win the Edenthorpe, Kirk Sandall and Barnby Dun ward from Labour.

However, victor Fred Gee who won the seat with a narrow majority of 37 was not even at the count to celebrate his victory.

Labour lost three seats overall, independent John Cooke returning to the council in Rossington after ousting John Healy with a majority of 314.

There was some good news locally for Labour, winning Bessacarr and Cantley from the Liberal Democrats, Neil Gethin securing his place in the council chamber with a majority of 142, with the Lib Dems pushed into third behind UKIP.

Doncaster Mayor Ros Jones said: “I am delighted that we have retained so many Labour seats, especially as we have had to deal with so many horrible cuts.

“Unfortunately we have lost some good councillors but also gained a new young one too.”

It was a good night for the Conservatives, retaining all their seats.

The new make up of the council is Labour 48 (-2), Conservatives 8 (no change), Independents 3 (+1), Lib Dem 2 (-1), UKIP 1 (+1), Other 1 (+1).
