litterbugs are being warned of the cost of not using rubbish bins after thousands of pounds worth of fines were issued.

Doncaster’s Deputy Mayor Cynthia Ransome has warned of the consequences of littering as 12 people faced fines and costs totalling almost £2,000 at the town’s magistrates’ court this month.

Councillor Ransome said: “Each of these people could have avoided having to pay a fine by simply putting their rubbish in a bin.

“They could also have reduced the amount they have to pay by settling their fine at the first opportunity rather than waiting until the matter got to court.”

The 12 people convicted were issued with fines ranging from £36 to £100.

All offenders had to pay up to £100 in court costs and a £15 victim surcharge.

Residents are being encouraged to inform the council if they see anyone littering by visting the council website at www.doncaster.gov.uk
