STAFF and clients at a substance misuse service completed more than 20 marathons to raise more than £1000 to benefit a Dearne cancer charity.

Rotherham Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust (RDaSH), which runs the Doncaster-based New Beginnings service, teamed up with substance misuse support groups and members of the Rovers in the Community citizenship programme to do a six-hour relay-based endurance event at Lakeside, Doncaster.

About 70 people took part in the ‘Marathon-a-thon’ and they completed 363 laps, which is the equivalent of 577 miles or just over 22 marathons.

The money will go towards the Aurora Cancer Charity, which has centres in Mexborough’s Montagu Hospital and Doncaster Royal Infirmary. The service offers morale boosting beauty tips and therapies to cancer survivors.

RDaSH substance misuse practitioner and event organiser Neil Firbank said: “This was all about raising the self-esteem of service users and providing them with an opportunity to give something back to the community.”
