A DONCASTER racehorse owner and high profile football agent has been fined more than £6,000 for driving while banned - with drugs in his car.

Willie McKay, who worked closely with Doncaster Rovers handling transfers throughout last season, found himself in trouble after police pulled him over for using his mobile at the wheel.

Officers discovered he was banned from driving - and had cocaine in his car.

McKay was stopped while using his mobile phone he drove down Pall Mall in central London last month.

The agent thought his driving ban had expired, but computer checks revealed he was disqualified until October.

McKay was also cautioned after a bag of cocaine was found inside his car.

The agent pleaded guilty to driving while disqualified and without insurance at Westminster Magistrates’ Court but was heavily criticised by District Judge Quentin Purdy and threatened with future imprisonment.

“You arrogantly chose to abuse the ban by driving and you drove simply because you’d got a car,” said Mr Purdy.

“You should have known what would happen, but just so you are crystal clear, if you choose to drive a vehicle on the road during the next 18 months you will be driving while disqualified.

“And with your record you will almost certainly be going into custody.”

McKay was fined £6,115, which he paid immediately afterwards.

Lawyer Bob Dwek told the hearing: “My client has admitted the offence. He has shown remorse and is extremely worried about the consequences of this conviction. I ask you to deal with him by way of a heavy financial penalty.”

McKay was closely involved with Doncaster Rovers last season and worked with the club to bring a succession of big name former Premier League players to the club on short-term contracts.

The included former Senegal world cup star El Hadji Diouf, Habib Beye from Aston Villa and defender Pascal Chimbonda who all arrived at the Keepmoat Stadium in a bid to revive their careers.

He was given the job of handling the club’s transfer policy which was met with criticism following the Rovers’ demise into League One.

The Scot is also well known in the borough for his racing interests, having bought Martin Grange stables in Bawtry, which has trained a number of winners.

His high-profile clients include the controversial midfielder Joey Barton.
