Head suspended from top secondary leaves his post

a HEADTEACHER who was suspended from one of Doncaster’s highest achieving schools following claims of staff bullying will not be returning.

The governing body at Hayfield School confirmed that Dr Sai Patel, who was suspended in March, had reached an “agreement” with the school and would not return to his post.

Graham Hartshorn, chair of governors said: “Dr Patel and the governing body have reached an agreement, as a result of which Dr Patel will not be returning to the school.

“Over the last few months acting head, Maria Rock, has provided good leadership and stability for our students and staff at The Hayfield School, and will continue to do so until a new headteacher is appointed.”

Doncaster Council refused to give details about any kind of financial settlement because of “legal issues”.

Speaking at the time of the suspension John Coward from the National Union of Teachers said: “This was a brave decision by the governors that will help the school move forward in the future.”

The secondary school in Hurst Lane, Auckley, is in the middle of celebrating its 40th birthday this year. Last August year 11 pupils achieved the highest ever GCSE results in the history of Doncaster. Record breaking results saw 82 per cent of teenagers achieving five GCSE passes or equivalent, including English and maths.

Dr Patel took up the job at Hayfield in 2008 from the school’s only other head Dr Tony Storey, who was awarded the MBE and the Freedom of the Borough of Doncaster for his services to education.

Before arriving at Hayfield, Dr Patel had been head of design and technology at Deacons School in Peterborough before it changed to Thomas Deacon Academy..
