Garden work under way

WORK is set to get under way this week to create a brand new memorial garden for Epworth.

Construction is set to start on the site in Albion Hill following the securing of £3,000 from North Lincolnshire Council to fund the project.

Leader Coun Liz Redfern said: “I hope that we can make a start on things in the next few days. The contractors have been appointed and we have had very positive feedback about the proposals from members of the public.”

The improvements to the war memorial are expected to be completed in time for the annual Remembrance Day service in November.

Councillors and Isle of Axholme MP Andrew Percy met with members of the Royal British Legion earlier this year to finalise the proposals which will include new seating and planting areas as well as a flag pole.

The garden will be situated on the grassed area around the war memorial - originally pencilled in to be a car park.

Coun Redfern added: “The scheme will see a remembrance garden created which can be used to remember those from Epworth who have served our country.

“Along with other planting, some seating and some paving around the memorial itself, we should be able to create a really lovely memorial garden where people can sit in peace and quite and remember their loved ones.

“We are also going to erect a flag pole so that the union flag can fly all year round in the town. We are very pleased with the plans and things are progressing really well.”

Proposals are now being drawn up for a dedication ceremony and official unveiling, with details expected to be announced over the next few weeks.
