Fundraiser for charity

INJURED troops’ appeal Help for Heroes is set to receive a £1,500 donation after a charity football match on playing fields at Dearne Valley College.

Organiser Matthew Moore, 19, had put together a team of friends from around the Rotherham area, aged from 17 to 40, to play against soldiers from 1 CS Battalion Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers.

The troops stormed to an 8-1 victory in the game, played recently at the Manvers-based college.

Matthew, from Hoyland and a student at the college, said: “I used the event as a target as I have been injured since January with a torn knee ligament, damaged knee cartilage and damaged hamstring. The event is one of the first times I have been able to run, as I only came off crutches five weeks ago and I am still attending physio sessions at Barnsley Hospital.”

A raffle was held afterwards at the Fitzwilliam Arms in Elsecar.
