Foundations are laid for redevelopment of estate
WORKS are underway to breathe new life into a rundown housing estate plagued by yobs and arsonists.
Redevelopment of the Granby estate in Edlington has been a priority for residents in recent years, but the project ran into difficulties after Government funding was withdrawn last year.
But now through Doncaster Council and house builder Keepmoat, the first of the 387 new homes will be completed by November.
Peter Davies, mayor of Doncaster said: “It is great to see that work has started on this site.
“After the Pathfinder funding ceased, Doncaster Council pledged to fund the clearance of this site.”
The development will be a mix of houses, flats and bungalows, with 271 homes for sale and the remaining 116 available for rent through housing providers.
Between 2004 and 2006 Edlington was designated as a housing market renewal funding area under the Government’s Pathfinder scheme, which aimed to breathe new life into areas with large numbers of empty or hard to sell properties.
Work to demolish rundown homes on the estate began, but funding for the project then came to an end in 2011.
Empty homes were often set on fire and anti-social behaviour on the estate was a concern for residents.
Mark Knight, new build managing director of Lakeside-based Keepmoat, said: “This development will support the community, create employment opportunities and provide much needed affordable new homes, which is great news for local people and the local area as a whole.”
A sales office has now opened on the site, for people interested in buying or renting a home in the form of a cabin on site.
The opening times are 10am to 5pm daily, except Tuesday and Wednesday, with a show home due to open in November.
