FORMER POLICE STATION SET ALIGHT
ARSONISTS are being blamed for setting fire to the former police station in Conisbrough this week.
The building, on Castle Street, was set alight just after midnight on Monday night.
Firefighters say arsonists had started the blaze in a first floor room and the flames spread upstairs.
A spokesman from Mexborough station said: "The fire was quite large when we arrived, it had spread up a staircase and completely gutted the inside.
"The fire is being treated as suspicious and an investigation has been launched."
Crews from Mexborough and Brampton stations were called to the scene. Firefighters in breathing apparatus entered the building and extinguised the flames after about an hour. No-one was inside the property.
The station has been unoccupied since it closed about two and a half years ago. Since then it has been bought by a private owner and is currently up for sale.
