Fire crews from five stations were called out to help retrieve a horse from a deep ditch.

The horse was found to be already dead when engines and crews arrived at the scene just outside Epworth on Sunday morning.

A fire spokesman said a veterinary surgeon wore a life jacket and climbed down a ladder in to the drain to confirm the horse was not alive.

The incident took place just before 10am, under a bridge near the ‘five ways’ roundabout with the A161.

The fire crews from Epworth, Scunthorpe and Immingham West used specialist heavy lifting gear to remove the dead animal from the ditch.
