A LIFT maintenance company whose negligence led to a shop worker being seriously injured has been fined £5,000 following a prosecution by Doncaster Council.

Advance Lifts Ltd of Chiswick High Road, Chiswick, London were also ordered to pay £3,000 costs and a victim surcharge of £15 by District Judge Bennett at Doncaster Magistrates on December 10 2012.

On August 11 2009 an employee of TJ Hughes in Doncaster was seriously injured when the goods lift in the store fell from the first floor into the lift pit.

The counterweight shaft had seized and eventually this led to the counterbalance failure which meant the ropes gave way and the lift car fell. The emergency brakes did not deploy.

The company responsible for the servicing and maintenance at the time of accident was Advance Lifts Ltd. The firm had also been responsible for the previous refurbishment of the counterweight shaft in 2008.

Following the accident Advance Lifts pleaded guilty to a breach of Section 3 of the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974.

The Deputy Mayor, Councillor Cynthia Ransome, said: “This was a very serious accident which could have killed the member of staff involved.

“The health and safety of local people is paramount for us and Doncaster Council takes strong action against those who fail in their duties.”
