The South Yorkshire Times can reveal the Dearne’s worst blackspot for nuisance bikers.

Figures provided by South Yorkshire Police reveal the Dearne and Mexborough Safer Neighbourhood Team areas have the worst problem in the area for off-road motorcycle nuisance.

The figures, obtained by the South Yorkshire Times under the Freedom of Information Act, show there were seven complaints to police in the year to September 2013 in each of those areas.

Police and councillors in Dearne, which covers Thurnscoe, Bolton and Goldthorpe, and Mexborough, which includes villages Harlington, Barnburgh and High Melton, say they are working hard to tackle the problem.

Police sergeant Richard Vernon has led police operations to target nuisance bikers in the Dearne and Doncaster areas.

He said: “Some bikers don’t realise they’re doing anything wrong. But getting motorbikes round the back of their homes gets people very annoyed. We also get complaints from people on public footpaths who are concerned that they are having to dodge motorbikes.

“It is a regular complaint from people who attend our meetings, although more serious crimes will always take priority, like burglaries. But as soon as time and resources permit we will look at it.” Dearne councillor May Noble said: “The police and council are working hard to tackle the issue and I would urge residents to report incidents.

“If we can get the addresses from where these bikes are coming from then we can take action.”
