Fight against benefit fraud
OVER 230 people were charged with housing benefit fraud from 2011 to 2012 in Rotherham, a report has revealed.
Thirty-two people of those charged were prosecuted successfully, while 201 were cautioned or issued with penalties.
The annual fraud report shows there to be a significant number of housing benefit frauds in the borough, despite the ongoing fight against this.
However, would-be fraudsters are warned that the Council will pursue suspects, and take action to recover resources where fraud has been proved.
The seven-page report reveals that overall, the authority investigated over 1,000 potentially fraudulent cases in 2011/12.
It recovered £2.52 million in overpayments of housing and council tax benefits made due to fraud, compared to £2.45 million the previous year. One claimant spent six months in prison for fraudulently claiming £30,000 in benefits over 10 years.
