Ex-Dons star at centre of sex probe
A FORMER Doncaster rugby league star has been arrested on suspicion of sexual activity with a child. Ex-international player Jamie Bloem, aged 41, from South Africa and living in Halifax, West Yorkshire, was held by police then bailed.
A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “A 41-year-old Halifax man has been arrested on suspicion of sexual activity with a child in connection with an ongoing child protection investigation.
“He has been bailed pending further inquiries.”
Mr Bloem was tipped to break into the Super League next season as a referee having enjoyed a top-flight career as a full back, wing and second row.
A spokesman for the Rugby Football League said the league was aware of the allegations and the investigation. But he refused to say whether Mr Bloem would be officiating at any of the games at the weekend.
Officials for games will be announced later in the week.
As a player, Mr Bloem made his name at Doncaster.
Mr Bloem started the club’s only season in the sport’s top flight in 1994, after having played in the previous season’s successful promotion campaign.
He starred in some of the club’s opening games of the campaign but was later banned for failing a drugs test, forcing him out of the game for two years. Mr Bloem also played for Thornensians in Thorne.
