Drummer’s death inspires new fund

A CHARITY has been set up in memory of Radiohead drum technician Scott Johnson, who died after a stage collapsed in Toronto.
The Scott Johnson Bursary will fund musical equipment in Rotherham.
Scott, who lived in Hickleton, and had played for bands including Keane, was crushed as a stage was being set up ahead of a Radiohead gig in Toronto in June.
He was part of a team setting up equipment.
Posting on Radiohead’s Facebook page, drummer Philip Selway announced the launch of the charity, saying: “Over the past couple of months, a number of people have asked if there is anything they can do in memory of Scott.
“Scott’s parents have now created the Scott Johnson Bursary Fund for Young Musicians.
“This will fund musical equipment for young people in Rotherham, where Scott grew up.”
Scott’s parents said in a statement: “It has been heart-warming to receive kind wishes.
“We have had many requests for donations in place of flowers and have set up an account that will be the Scott Johnson Bursary for Young Musicians.
“This will be managed by his friends locally as a fund primarily in Rotherham schools.”
They added: “Frankly we cannot equate to the financial aspects but if it helps anyone to contribute in this way the account is established to ensure no other fund is created in error.
“It may take a while, but we will keep you informed on how the money is spent in due course.”
Radiohead paid their own special tribute to their friend last month, during their first gig since his death, by filling a screen with photographs of the musician.
The music fraternity gathered at Scott’s funeral in Doncaster to bid a sad farewell. Among the congregation were members of Keane.
In addition a number of stars, including Elton John, contacted Scott’s dad, Ken, to offer condolences and support.
