Police are urging lorry and van drivers to be on their guard after a spate of thefts in the Doncaster area.

In the latest incident, a £150,000 HGV, carrying a crane, was stolen from a town centre hotel car park on Tuesday. The vehicle was later found abandoned at Stockbridge Lane, Bentley, with its load intact.

South Yorkshire Police Chief Inspector Gwyn Thomas: “We are seeing an increase in the number of tools and plant equipment being stolen from across the area.

“We’d urge drivers of commercial vehicles to keep belongings safe and secure, remove tools from vans overnight and at weekends and ensure plant equipment is in a safe location.”

South Yorkshire Police launched Operation Lockdown in October to target house burglary and vehicle crime. So far, over 700 suspects have been arrested.
