A historic Dearne sports pavilion has been saved from potential closure thanks to a double cash boost totalling more than £80, 000.

Trustees feared for the future of the weathered changing facilities at Mexborough Athletic Ground, which dates back 125 years and has not been updated since the 1970s.

But the pavilion, off Hampden Road, now has a sporting chance at a long-term future after trustees secured two grants to pay for a major refurbishment.

The Veolia Environmental Trust has just awarded £37,752 following a £48, 200 cash boost from Sport England last September.

Voluntary grounds caretaker Hugh Tingle, 61, of Mexborough Athletic Sports Trust, said: “The pavilion, in time, would have been in danger of closing.

“It has not had any work done to it since the 1970s.

“This is a great boost for us and secures the future of the pavilion for generations to come.”

Improvement work to the three tier facility includes increasing the size of the away changing rooms, new toilets, new first aid and referees room, plus improvements to the drainage and appearance outside.

Work is set to start in April with completion due in October, not long after the start of the new football season.

Mr Tingle, of Cliffield Road, Swinton, added: “We get football and crickets clubs, from senior level to youth level, using it virtually every week.

“There are about 5,000 people who use it every year.

“The sports ground is a major part of the town’s heritage and we believe it will now have a bright future.”
