POLICE are hunting a sick yob who left human excrement on the steps of a war memorial - on the eve of Remembrance Sunday.

Shocked villagers arrived to lay poppies at High Melton on Sunday morning to find someone had defecated on the monument in the hours leading up to the ceremony.

Upset residents were forced to go ahead with the ceremony with the human waste still in place, to allow police to carry out forensic tests and preserve evidence.

The monument was later sealed off.

The vile act of vandalism has drawn furious criticism from council chiefs.

Fuming Mayor of Doncaster Peter Davies said: “This absolutely unspeakable and unthinkable act defies belief.

“Whoever did this are the absolute dregs of society - it is beyond comprehension that anyone could do anything like this.

“The individual responsible should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves. To be quite frank they are scum, and the culprits should be named and shamed in public and punished.”

PC Robert Scarrow said: “The desecration of a war memorial, particularly at this time of year, is abhorrent.

“This incident has deeply shaken the local community, and we would urge anyone with information to come forward to help identify those responsible.”

Anyone with information should call South Yorkshire Police on 101 quoting incident 1,208 of November 11.
