Doncaster Trading Standards warning over storm repairs

Doncaster Council is warning consumers to be wary of rogue traders offering to fix storm damage.

It comes as we enter a period where uninvited callers often target vulnerable people, offering to do household tasks such as repairing roofs and clearing gardens.

Using rogue traders to fix things can leave consumers in unexpected debt, as jobs usually need re-doing. Consumers are often charged extortionate prices for unnecessary jobs, and even conned into paying without any work taking place.

Trading Standards services are committed to tackling doorstep crime and take innovative steps to deal with offenders and to protect communities. As well as prosecuting those responsible for scams, Cold Calling Control Zones help protect vulnerable householders.

Councilor Joe Blackham, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, Enforcement and Trading Services, said: “If someone knocks on your door and offers to fix your chimney, roof or tidy up your garden just say ‘no’. If the work needs to be done the best thing to do is get three written quotes from businesses that you have addresses for, who are members of recognised trade associations and have been recommended to you. We encourage householders to report doorstep cold-callers visiting www.doncaster.gov.uk/tradingstandards or calling 08454 040506.”
