Members of the Special Constabulary will be out in force this weekend tackling crime in Doncaster.
Teams of Specials will be based in the town centre tomorrow targeting shoplifters.
They will be in uniform and plain clothes working alongside the district’s Retail Crime Team to look out for Doncaster’s ‘most wanted’ and to offer crime prevention advice to the public.
Attention in Doncaster then switches to a traffic operation on Sunday, where Specials will be stopping motorists suspected of speeding, drink driving and checking for insurance and road tax offences.
Specials are volunteers who have the same powers, and receive the same training, as regular officers.
South Yorkshire Chief Constable David Crompton said: “Our Specials perform a wider range of duties than most other forces, as demonstrated by the activity this weekend, giving individuals key skills and experiences while supplementing the work of regular officers.
“Our latest recruitment drive has reached the halfway stage and it’s great to see the extra Specials who have already joined our ranks since June last year.
“I would encourage people from a variety of backgrounds and age groups to consider a new challenge with us.”
