The victim of a child sex attacker has spoken of her joy after a court finally ended her near 20 year wait for justice.

Former scout volunteer and market inspector Robert Buckley has been jailed for a string of offences he committed against children.

Now one of those abused by Buckley has come forward to urge other victims of sexual offences not to shy away from reporting them.

Lindsey Steel, who grew up in Edlington, has waived her right to life-long anonymity in a bid to reach out to others who may be afraid of reporting similar crimes.

She was abused by Buckley between the ages of 12 and 14, but despite reporting him to police, detectives did not take action because of ‘insufficient evidence to secure a prosecution,’ South Yorkshire Police confirmed

It was not until a 15-year-old girl came forward in 2012 saying that she had also been abused by Buckley, of Tickhill Road, Balby, that the case was re-opened and he was brought to court.

Speaking after the conclusion of the case Lindsey, now 32 and a mum-of-three, says Buckley’s actions have had a lasting and damaging effect on her life.

She added: “The day he got sentenced was the first night I was able to sleep for more than an hour and a half since it happened.”

“I’m glad to know he’s off the streets so hopefully won’t be able to access any more children.”

Buckley, 54, known locally as Bob Buckley, met his victims through his job as a market inspector in Edlington.

He was found guilty of two counts of inciting sexual activity with a child under 16 and three counts of indecent assault of a girl under 14.

The indecent assaults were committed in 1996 when Buckley was 32-years-old and the inciting sexual activity offences he committed in 2012.

He was jailed for 12 months and placed on the Sexual Offenders’ Register for 10 years.

Lindsey, now of Dinnington, says Buckley was a friend of her family and even helped to get her mother a job.

“I want to let people know what’s happened to me because I want to people to know that it’s okay to come forward, and that you’ve got nothing to be ashamed of. You feel like you’ve done something wrong, and it’s your fault but I know it wasn’t now. I was just a child,” she added.

“I don’t think he got anywhere near long enough for what he did, but I understand the judge has to go on the guidance of the law.

“I would encourage anyone who has had this happen to them to come forward.

“It’s been hard but worth it.”

Buckley was also a volunteer with Danum District Scouts between March 1997 and January 2013.

Scouting Association spokesman, Simon Hughes said of the case: “The Scout Association is aware of the conviction of Buckley. We are pleased that he is being punished for his crimes and will never again be able to work with young people”

Det Con Richard Dickinson said of Buckley’s conviction: “I want to praise both the victims in this case for having the courage to come forward and report these offences to the police.

“We will always investigate reports made to us, regardless of when the offences were committed, and securing a conviction in this case I hope highlights our commitment to protecting victims and ensuring those responsible are prosecuted.”

Anyone wishing to report a crime should contact South Yorkshire Police on 101, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
