Doncaster rapes are ‘rare’

TWO rapes which happened within hours of each other have been described as “rare” by a top cop.

Two women were raped following a day at the St Leger race meeting in two separate attacks when they were on their own.

Police have launched manhunts to trace the attackers - however the incidents are not linked, a police spokesman confirmed.

Det Insp Richard Partridge told the Free Press that police inquiries were ongoing and that women should make sure they were not left on their own at night.

He said: “We want to reassure the public that we are dealing with this incident as a priority.”

He went on: “Offences of this nature are rare in Doncaster and I would always urge people to follow basic, personal safety advice when out during the evening or early hours by sticking to well lit main routes and not taking short cuts.”

The first rape happened when a 24-year-old slim woman with long hair and dressed for the races on St Leger Day, was walking along Lawn Avenue through an alleyway towards Town Field.

A man started shouting for her attention and when she arrived at the top of Town Field it is thought she was grabbed and raped by him at around 10pm on September 15.

A few hours later a 20-year-old woman was raped in Bowers Fold in the town centre between 1.30am and 2am.

Anyone with information should call South Yorkshire Police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
