A Doncaster man who has devoted a lifetime of service to the Air Training Corps has been awarded the British Empire Medal in the Queen’s birthday honours list today.

Brian Wood, aged 76, who lives in High Road, Warmsworth, with his wife, Janice, said: “I am flabbergasted - it is a bolt out of the blue. I feel humbled and honoured.”

Brian joined 1053 Armthorpe Squadron of the ATC as a cadet in 1951 and has hardly been away since.

He wne on to become adult Warrant Officer, Squadron Commander, Wing Sports Officer and later a civilian instructor.
