A Doncaster pub landlord says he is furious about a bogus sponsorship scam that has conned several residents out of cash.

South Yorkshire Police are investigating reports of a man claiming to be collecting money for a bereaved family in Edenthorpe, Kirk Sandall and Askern.

The man has told people his brother is taking part in a sponsored bungee jump at The Hollybush pub, Church Balk, Edenthorpe, to raise money to repair a child’s gravestone.

However, Philip Anderson, The Hollybush landlord, knows nothing about it and has contacted the police after receiving a number of phone calls from people enquiring about the jump.

Branding the scam ‘disgraceful’, the 60 year-old said: “Our pub is generous with giving money to charity, I think that’s why they’ve targeted us.”

“These people are parasites, taking from generous people in our community.

“I advise people not to give money to people at the door, even if the form looks right.

“People should check with the charity first, and tell them to come back.”

Despite not providing a name for the bereaved family he is collecting money for, many people are understood to have handed money over to the bogus sponsorship collector after being shown legitimate-looking sponsorship forms.

The collector, who was riding a bike, is described as white, of medium build, about 5ft 9in and wearing a dark green jacket and dark hat.

The Hollybush has supported many charities in the past including Help for Heroes and Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice, which it recently donated £1,300 to.

Philip says he hopes the scam will not put people off donating to bona-fide causes the pub supports.

He said: “The next time we raise money for charity, we will let our customers know about it. I hope people will still want to donate.”

n Anyone who believes they have also been approached by the hoax collector, or can help police identify the man, should call South Yorkshire Police on 101, quoting crime reference number A/5349/14.
