Trying to raise the cash to put down as a bond on a rented flat has landed a Doncaster man with a more secure roof over his head.

Kyle Luke Turner is now residing within the four walls of a prison cell after being sentenced to two-and-a-half years for drug dealing.

The 28-year-old had been kicked out of the family home in Jossey Lane, Scawthorpe, and needed hundreds of pounds to pay a landlord’s bond and rent.

For a few days in May 2013 he became involved in selling drugs until police stopped the car in which he was a passenger, said Neil Coxon, prosecuting at Sheffield Crown Court.

Plain clothes officers observed the car in the Balby area and, when it was stopped on Trafford Way in the town centre, with Turner in the passenger seat, they found 35 wraps of heroin and five packs of crack cocaine.

When he was searched at the police station, officers found more drugs on his person, the total amount having a street value of £650.

They also recovered £820 in cash, and a phone he was carrying contained incriminating texts about drugs, said Mr Coxon.

Turner told the police: “I’m doing it to earn money because I got kicked out of home.”

He pleaded guilty to two charges of possessing heroin and cocaine with intent to supply, and possessing criminal property in respect of the money, which has been confiscated by the court.

Turner has four previous convictions for drugs possession.

Defence solicitor Tariq Hussein provided the judge with a letter from the defendant’s mother, who is cared for by the defendant because she suffers from epilepsy and arthritis.

“He was dealing for just four days,” he said.

“In a perverse way the offending has been a blessing in disguise because he is now back with his mother and gets carer’s allowance to look after her.

“He has stopped taking cannabis and has turned his life around.”
