Doncaster Council will be commemorating Holocaust Memorial Day 2014 with a public gathering at Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery today (Monday January 27) at 1pm. The event will be led by Ros Jones, Mayor of Doncaster.

Holocaust Memorial Day is about remembering the millions who were persecuted by the Nazis, as well as subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.

The theme for Holocaust Memorial Day 2014 is ‘Journeys’ and people in Doncaster are being urged to reflect on the experience of those affected by persecution and genocide. Their experience is often characterised by forced journeys - for some that was a journey of survival, for others of migration. Sadly, many did not complete the journey .

Ros Jones, Mayor of Doncaster, said: “The theme for this year’s memorial is journeys. I would like everyone here today to make a small journey towards understanding what has taken place. The more we know and understand the more we learn from the past.

“Journeys should be made with freedom and people should have the choice of religion and belief. Real freedom means having an ability to be able to make choices. It helps shape a society where everyone has an opportunity to prosper irrespective of faith, race, disability or sexual orientation. Freedom means being able to discuss the ills of society and to actively participate in changing how things work for the greater good.

“Here in Doncaster we are lucky enough to go about our business freely and without fear of intimidation or persecution. Doncaster should be proud of its welcome to many people from around the world.”
