Don Valley MP Caroline Flint has praised the work of a charity which reminds men to take more responsibility for reducing violence against women.

Ms Flint met former England rugby league team player Ikram Butt, who is an ambassador for the White Ribbon Campaign, yesterday to mark the United Nations’ International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.

Mr Butt is the only Muslim to have represented England in rugby league and is one of the White Ribbon Campaign’s biggest ambassadors. Yesterday also marked White Ribbon Day.

Speaking after her meeting with Mr Butt, Ms Flint said: “It is great to see Ikram Butt supporting this vital campaign. November 25 is a special day to remind men to take more responsibility for reducing violence against women.

“Violence against women should not be tolerated. We can’t close our eyes to it or pretend it doesn’t happen. Men have a huge part to play in campaigning to stop violence against women, for only then will we make our society safer for over half the population.”
