The regeneration of a large part of Doncaster’s town centre is to continue with redundant buildings set to be knocked down.
Doncaster Council and its development partner Muse Developments, have handed over a number of unused sites and buildings in the Waterdale area to specialist demolition contractor DSR Demolition Limited to prepare the sites for the next stage of the town’s £300million Civic and Cultural Quarter (CCQ).
Fencing will go up round the now vacant Council House, old Civic Theatre and Scarborough House next week (Monday, January 20)
Safety hoardings are already in place round the former Girls School to ensure work takes place safely.
Internal strip out work will start shortly with demolition planned in the coming months.
The Council House, Civic Theatre and Scarborough House will be totally demolished, while the architecturally significant central frontage of the Girls School will be retained. The works are scheduled to be completed in August and will see the sites primed for redevelopment.
This is part of the council’s plans to reduce their 461 buildings, which cost £12million per year to run, by 70 per cent.
Mayor of Doncaster, Ros Jones, said: “This is another step forward in the transformation of Waterdale. The Civic and Cultural Quarter and its range of top quality developments have made a remarkable difference to an area that was previously in decline. The new urban landscape and skyline have breathed a new lease of life into the area and this major regeneration scheme is acting as catalyst for new investment, jobs and growth in the town centre and other parts of the borough.”
Dan Needham regional director at Muse Developments added: “This is a demonstration of our clear commitment to the continued regeneration of Waterdale following the completion of phase one in September 2013. We are working to identify replacement complimentary leisure and commercial uses to be developed on the cleared sites to further enhance the Civic and Cultural Quarter”
Continued Dan: “Work continues apace at the scheme, with the development of the first phase of residential — The Gables. The showhome and sales office launched last week and we’ve already received a fantastic number of enquiries and our first sale.”
All trees will be protected during the works and access to neighbouring car parks and footpaths will be either maintained or temporary diversions put in place.
The contractor will put various measures in place to minimise dust, noise and disruption for people using the area and living close by.
The first phase of the CCQ has seen the creation of Cast, Doncaster’s new performance venue, the impressive Sir Nigel Gresley Square and other quality public areas, new civic offices, a refurbished Civic Quarter Multi-Storey Car Park, new housing and new road layouts.
Additional housing, leisure and other complementary developments are planned as the scheme progresses.
