Dearne MP’s fears that ‘millions could lose right to vote’

A Dearne MP is warning millions of people across the country could lose their vote following recent changes to the electoral registration process.

Michael Dugher, Labour’s Barnsley East MP, spoke out following new rules which state the head of each household is no longer allowed to register everyone in that house to vote.

Individuals will now be automatically registered, but Mr Dugher is warning those whose information is not on the Government’s database may disappear from the register altogether.

Residents should receive instructions from their local councils in the coming weeks, telling them wether they need to register or not.

Mr Dugher said: “With dramatic decreases in the number of people voting, it is more important than ever that people make sure they are registered.

“In 2010, just 56 per cent of Barnsley’s population turned out to vote, compared with a national average of 65.1 per cent.

“What is even more alarming is that only 44 per cent of young people voted in 2010. This is a big worry for people up and down the country.”

“I would urge everyone across Barnsley to look out for their letter from Barnsley Council over the coming weeks and make sure they’re registered to vote.”
