Dearne firms honoured at Barnsley and Rotherham Business Awards

Businesses big and small were rewarded for all of their hard work at the annual Barnsley and Rotherham Business Awards.

Several Dearne-based firms either won or were highly commended at the ceremony held at Magna Science Adventure Centre in Rotherham on October 14. Around 500 guests attended and they waited with bated breath as awards were given out in 11 categories following more than 100 submissions.

Jump Inc took home the Enterprising Barnsley Most Promising New Business Award in recognition of the success of its giant £1.2 million trampoline centre at Parkgate Retail Park, which has been a hit with visitors since opening last year.

Rotherham United Community Sports Trust, which hosts football events across the Dearne, won the Rotherham Together Partnership Business Community Impact Award.

Berneslai Homes, which manages the council’s housing stock in Goldthorpe, Bolton-on-Dearne and Thurnscoe, was highly commended.

Goldthorpe-based window manufacturer Building Product Solutions was highly commended in the Brook Corporate Developments Manufacturing Excellence Award category.

Meanwhile the top prize went to Barnsley-based distribution and warehousing company, Universal Components UK Ltd, which was named Business of the Year.

Andrew Denniff, chief executive of event organisers Barnsley and Rotherham Chamber of Commerce, said: “As always the evening was superb.

“My congratulations go out to all our winners and especially Universal Components, the Business of the Year.

“All our shortlisted entrants can congratulate themselves in contributing to another successful event.”

In addition, the nominees for this year’s Doncaster Business Awards have been revealed.

The awards night, sponsored by Origin Broadband and organised by Doncaster Chamber, takes place at Doncaster Racecourse on December 8.

A number of Dearne-based firms are on the shortlist.

Doncaster Culture and Leisure Trust, which manages Dearne Valley Leisure Centre in Mexborough, is up for Large Business of the Year, sponsored by Yorkshire Wildlife Park.

St. Leger Homes, which manages council homes across Mexborough, Conisbrough and Denaby, is in line for the Excellence in People Development and Training award, sponsored by Taylor Bracewell LLP.

Dan Fell, chief executive of Doncaster Chamber, said: “Doncaster is home to some outstanding businesses.

“Many previous winners and finalists have achieved increased sales as a result of the awards.”

More than 900 business people are expected to attend the prestigious event.
