Old quarry to become diving centre
EXCITING plans have emerged to build a specialist scuba diving centre at a disused quarry.
Wath-based Sub Aqua Divers are behind the project, which would involve transforming the former Kilnhurst Quarry site off Wentworth Road.
The proposed centre would be one of only seven in the UK, potentially bringing far-reaching benefits to the Dearne economy.
Mike Atkinson, director of Sub Aqua Divers, said: "Potentially, this could be phenomenal for the area. There are six diving centres like this around the UK and hopefully ours will be another major centre.
"This would be the only centre of its kind in Yorkshire, and Yorkshire is a big place. Everyone would benefit from a centre like this because people who visit will stay in hotels, have a drink in the pubs, use the petrol stations etc so the local economy as a whole benefits."
The proposal includes a diving centre and changing rooms, a viewing platform overlooking a visitor cafe plus an equipment shop, gift shop and welfare facilities.
The centre would also have classrooms to teach divers of all abilities and there could also be links with emergency services, schools and other diving clubs.
An outdoor play area is also planned for young children not old enough to dive into the depths.
The former quarry basin is currently full of water and is about 16 metres deep, but the plan is to drain it over the winter, cut away any greenery and remove any obstacles to make it safe to dive.
Tests would then be done on the quarry to see how deep it could be dug, in the hope of dredging it to a depth of 40 metres to allow for advanced dive training.
A proposal has been submitted to the Local Planning Authority for consideration in the hope that the centre will be operational by next summer.
