POLICE have confirmed that the 15-year-old who was found dead in Elsecar woods earlier this week was local boy Liam Antony Collier.

Emergency services were called at 8.30pm on Monday to the wood off Millhouses Street, that is popular with local youngsters.

Liam, a pupil at Wombwell High School, was pronounced dead shortly after help arrived at the scene.

His death is not being treated as suspicious.

Liam’s distraught family have released the following statement: “Liam was a ‘Jack the lad’, he worshipped his family, his mother, his brothers and his sisters.

“Liam was a good lad, he loved life and his mates. He will be sadly missed and we are devastated by our loss.”

Michael Dugher, the MP for Barnsley East, has added his condolences after hearing the tragic news about Liam.

He said:“Like all local residents, I was shocked and extremely saddened to hear of the death of Liam Collier. My heart goes out to his family and friends - and my thoughts and prayers are with them at this most difficult of times.”

Liam was said to have been heartbroken by the death of his mother Deborah Collier, 35, earlier this year following her battle with cancer.

A mass of tributes have been paid to the teenager on social networking site Facebook, and flowers were placed at the spot in the woods where he was found on Monday.

A post-mortem examination was to be carried out today and it is expected that an inquest may be opened this week.
