Day of action on the roads

A MAJOR day of action to tackle road safety resulted in a 70 per cent drop in collisions on South Yorkshire’s highways.

Fire, police and other partners came together to spell out driving dangers at dozens of events across the county on National Road Safety Day - coordinated by the Chief Fire Officers Association (CFOA).

The day of action helped bring the number of collisions on the county’s roads down to three on July 6, compared to a daily average of ten.

On the day, firefighters and paramedics gathered in Peel Square, Barnsley to talk to shoppers how they rescue the victims of serious road smashes.

Fire crews also met motorists at a string of supermarkets throughout South Yorkshire.

South Yorkshire Police delivered initiatives including speed enforcement, a driver awareness course at the Lifewise Centre and use of an unmarked HGV which enabled officers to see into the cabs of other HGVs and gain an alternative view into vehicles on the road.

South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue’s Delroy Galloway, said: “Whilst we’re happy to have made an impact locally on this important national day of action, our work to reduce collisions on our county’s roads continues.

“One death on the roads is too many, so we’re asking drivers to continue listening to the advice and to help us make our roads safer for themselves and other road users.”

Pc Bruce Yacomeni, of South Yorkshire Police, added: “As an officer dealing with incidents on the roads I know that just one moment of inattention as a driver, motorcyclist or pedestrian can lead to life changing circumstances.

“Throughout South Yorkshire, members of the Safer Roads Partnership work in a co-ordinated manner to reduce the numbers of people killed on the roads, supporting the Chief Fire Officers Association earlier this month on their day of action is just one example of this.

“Our ongoing aim is to make South Yorkshire roads safer and I urge members of the public to think about their actions, road safety is everyone’s responsibility.”
