Pupils and staff in the special educational needs department at Danum Academy’s Armthorpe Road site wanted to make a difference to needy children this Christmas and asked for donations of gifts to hand out.

“I cannot believe how generous everyone has been. We know that by doing our bit, we will have helped make a difference to children in our community,” said Sharon West, Danum’s Alternative Curriculum Co-ordinator.

Headteacher Ms Rebecca Staples added: “Students and staff also attended school in Christmas jumpers, T-shirts and ties to raise money for the Save the Children Fund and for a school in the Philippines, where the cousin of a member of staff works, that was devastated in the hurricane.
