Cyclist recovering

A CYCLIST who was seriously injured when a yob pushed him off his bike from a passing car is recovering from surgery in hospital.

Dave Scargill, aged 58, of Albany Close, Wombwell, suffered two broken ribs, a fractured collar bone and a punctured lung. when a car passenger leaned out of the window of a black Vauxhall Corsa to shove him with both arms as he rode along Bilham Lane near Thurnscoe.

That was two weeks ago. Dave was operated on last Friday to have metal plates placed in his collarbone, and was in the high dependancy unit of Barnsley Hospital until Sunday.

Police are still appealing for information about the horrific incident that occurred on August 23.

This week Dave’s wife Christine told the Times: “Dave’s looking like his old self now but is still in a lot of pain. We’re hoping he may get home this week but he still has a drain inserted in his lung.”

Dave is self-employed as a gas fitter and his son Alan is carrying on with the business, knowing his dad will need several weeks to recuperate.

“He can’t understand how anyone could act in such a way as these young men did,” said Christine. “We’re all still in shock. He just felt the hands on him as he rode along the road at about 30 miles an hour. The cyclist behind him saw the car passenger with his body right out of the window. Dave had no chance.”

Get well wishes have poured in from friends including members of Birdwell Wheelers, where Dave is a member, said his wife.

Anyone with information about the incident, which took place at around 7pm in the evening, should call South Yorkshire Police on 101 quoting incident number 973 of August 23.
