Cheltenham hope dies at Doncaster meeting
Doncaster Racecourse
A BIG name horse suffered a fatal fall while competing in a trial race at Doncaster.
Ridden by champion jockey Tony McCoy, six-year-old Darlan, which was rated as a big hope for next month’s Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham, fell heavily at the last hurdle and suffered a broken neck.
Although McCoy escaped serious injury, he sat out the rest of his day’s rides.
Darlan, trained by Nicky Henderson and owned by millionaire JP McManus, had been expected to prove a major rival for Hurricane Fly in next month’s race at Cheltenham.
His last win was at Kempton in the Christmas Hurdle on Boxing Day.
