A TEAM from Doncaster and Bassetlaw Hospitals who care for cancer patients have been shortlisted for two major national awards.

Doctors and nurses from the acute oncology service, which supports anyone with cancer who suddenly becomes unwell, has been shortlisted for a Macmillan Professionals Excellence Award, and reached the finals of the Quality in Care Excellence in Oncology Awards.

The team are on call through a scheme called the Patient Electronic Alert to Keyworker System (PEAKS), which contacts them by text message and email whenever a patient known to have cancer arrives at the hospital.

A specialist oncology nurse can then visit the patient to help assess them, provide specialist cancer input into their treatment and liaise with doctors caring for them.

Dr Joe Joseph, acute oncology lead and consultant haematologist at Doncaster and Bassetlaw Hospitals, said: “Our cancer patients do benefit immensely from our acute oncology service and we can see that it is making a difference.

“We hope to build on this success and serve our patients even better in future.”
