Firefighters are taking to the streets to advise shoppers as part of a major campaign to drive down winter fires.
South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service is taking its ‘Watch Out In Winter’ roadshow to Doncaster’s Lakeside Village Shopping Outlet on Friday, January 17, from 9am to 1pm.
Figures show the winter months are the busiest in terms of house fires, with firefighters attending around 170 incidents across South Yorkshire from December to February alone each year.
Kevin Ronan, head of community safety for the South Yorkshire brigade, said: “Our data confirms what we already knew, that house fires are more likely now than at any other time of the year.
“We’re only asking people to take basic precautions like testing their smoke alarms and taking extra care with things like cooking and heaters.
Firefighters advise people not to leave cooking unattended, not to even attempt to cook if they have been out drinking, and to keep heaters well away from soft furnishings.
The fire service will be at Lakeside again on January 27, February 3 and February 17.
