Call for private foster carers to register arrangement

RESIDENTS who have other people’s children living with them are encouraged to register as private foster carers to avoid falling foul of the law.

Anyone who looks after other people’s children under the age of 16 for more than 28 days at a time is legally obliged to register the arrangement with their local authority.

If the young person has a disability then the arrangement must be registered until they are 18.

Coun Eric Tatton-Kelly, cabinet member for children, said: “Many people are unaware of this law so we want to encourage people who are caring for other people’s children to get in touch to formalise the arrangement. This will enable us to offer help and support to both the carer and the young person.”

He added: “Parents often draw on the help of friends and family during times of separation or divorce, if they work during the night, or if they are living overseas. Our private fostering team will be able to support such arrangements by helping carers to access benefits they may be entitled to offering help and advice on child welfare issues.”

To register a private fostering arrangement in the borough, call 01302 737777.
