Bosom buddies offers breast feeding advice to mums

DEARNE mums considering the pros and cons of breastfeeding can get advice and information from Bossom Buddies bassed at Denaby and Conisbrough Children's Centre.

The 'Bosom Buddies' Peer Support Group offer one to one support at the Children's Centre, together with home visits and telephone support. In addition they attend local Midwife Clinics, Baby Clinics, Parentcraft Workshops and Children's Centre groups to engage with the hard-to-reach parents and offer information about the benefits of Breast feeding for themselves and their baby.

Midwife Ricky Hurley, sxaid: "Denaby and Conisbrough Children's Centre has been working towards improving the initiation and continuation rates of breast Feeding locally. We have been doing this by training local mums using a recognised NCT Peer Support Package to enable them to confidently offer support and information to pregnant and breast feeding mums locally.

"The advantages of utilising Peer Supporters are research proven as an effective method to engage hard-to-reach parents. Once the parents embrace their peer group the Bosom Buddies take the opportunity to discuss their own experiences and the health benefits of Breast Feeding informally. The success of the Bosom Buddies is already apparent with a recent increase in local Breast Feeding rates noted by the Midwives and Health Visitors."

The Bosom Buddies group are also involved in the planning and preparation for the new Baby Cafe launch in both Denaby and Conisbrough. The initiative is another attempt to offer a relaxed environment for pregnant and breast feeding mums, Bosom Buddies and Health Professionals to meet and share experiences and strive to improve the local Breastfeeding rates with information and support.
