DONCASTER Council has been awarded for its work to keep the borough clean and tidy.

The win comes following an unannounced inspection earlier in the year by Clean Britain Awards’ judges where they looked at issues such as dog fouling, litter, fly-tipping and graffiti.

The inspection was for The Chartered Institute of Wastes Management annual Clean Britain Awards.

The authority received a silver in the ‘large local authority’ category - which was for towns with a population of more than 200,000.

Coun Cynthia Ransome, cabinet member for communities, said: “We have worked incredibly hard to tackle environmental crime in Doncaster with many groundbreaking schemes such as our ‘pick up or pay up’ youth littering initiative or ‘who did this?’ graffiti campaigns and I am delighted that we have been honoured with a Silver Clean Britain Award.

“This award is not only recognition for all of our hard working staff but also of the efforts of residents who have backed our Love Where You Live campaign and rolled up there sleeves to make a positive difference to the borough.

“The judging criteria closes matches a lot of the topics that we’ve been encouraging residents to consider with Love Where You Live and our other campaigns looking at roadside litter, responsible dog owners and tackling illegal waste carriers.

“We simply wouldn’t have been able to win this without residents responding and playing their part.

“While this is a fantastic achievement we can’t and won’t rest on our laurels as there is still plenty of work to be done - we spend a staggering £3 million each year clearing up litter, which is money that could be spent on other services if we all just did that little bit more to tackle litter across the borough.”
