A SHREK look-alike was just one of the fancy-dress fundraisers who jogged around Manvers Lake on Saturday for a special cause.

The event took place in memory of Amy Wood, a former St Pius RC School pupil from Hoyland, who died of meningitis five years ago aged just 14.

Her friends were a riot of colour as they stepped out on a short, scenic jog or more challenging 5k route, in a bid to raise £5000 before November for the Meningitis Research Foundation.

Danica Youel, 19, of Darfield, spearheaded the effort and aims to take part in a skydive soon too, to bump up the cash.

She said: “We all really miss Amy. She died suddenly and we want to raise vital funds for research in to meningitis and septicaemia in her memory.”

Danica received help from 19-year olds Charlotte Ward of Goldthorpe, Gemma Cartwright of Bolton, and Leanne Atkinson and Sophie Steele from Conisbrough.

Anyone who wishes to support them further can do so at the website justgiving.com/rememberingamywood.
