Big plans for South Yorkshire business centre

N and S group, who have their offices based in the premises, bought the business at the end of last year, when the centre was threatened with closure.

At present, 22 resident businesses have secure locations for the future because of the purchase.

New owner Peter Newman, who took on the building in December, now plans to restore the building to its former glory.

He hopes in doing so he will attract more loacl businesses back in to the area and be able to use some of the space as an events and training centre. He also plans to base an iCloud business at the centre, on College Road.

He said: “We have companies and charity organisations in the building, some of these are very well known like, St Leger Homes, The Alzheimer’s Society, Victim Support and Mexborough Life Church.

“There are also other local companies, which employ in excess of 200 people between them, all of whom would have had to relocate or possibly lose their jobs.

“In addition, we have already created and saved six jobs for staff working for the centre, including receptionists, cleaners and maintenance staff.

“We are also looking to create more jobs with our in-house training centre, academy and cafeteria facilities plan for this year.”

Dating back to 1909, the building was originally a grammar school where the late poet laureate, Ted Hughes was a pupil. It was later converted to a business centre, opened by Prince Charles in 1993.

Peter added that space was still available in the centre and he was keen for more local businesses to use it.

“We have space available for office, training, meeting rooms, conference facilities and events, and other suggestions would be considered. We also offer help and advice for new start-ups as well as established companies.”
