Big painting for wounded heroes is back for auction

A SYMBOLIC artwork auctioned in aid of wounded soldiers like brave Ben Parkinson is back on sale in Doncaster for the same charity after its buyer understimated its size.
Talented Wheatley Hills artist Sara Otter donated her vibrant canvas Blood Stained Poppies to an auction in aid of Pilgrim Bandits, one of the forces charities supported by her friend Ben, in Bournemouth last November.
But after placing the winning bid on the abstract painting, the new owner decided it was just too big for him and opted to keep a smaller print version of it - at the same time letting Sara retain the original work in Doncaster.
Now Sara, 25, has teamed up with The Mac Gallery in Doncaster town centre to re-sell the popular painting raising even more cash for the Pilgrim Bandits charity of which Ben, 28, of Bessacarr, is a huge supporter of.
The giant red and white enamel piece goes on display as part of a bigger exhibition of Sara’s work, which will take over three entire rooms of the South Parade venue.
Sara said: “It’s great that I get to sell Blood Stained Poppies twice for Ben.
“I am really excited about The Mac Gallery display as it’s an amazing space.”
Sara, who suffers from a form of the sleep-disorder narcolepsy, only took up painting last summer following an accident which left her with serious health problems.
“I had a creative side nagging to get out, and I wanted to make something to decorate my house.
“So one sunny day, I started work in the garden on a blank canvas and was really pleased with the results.
“I posted it on Facebook and the number of ‘likes’ went crazy and people were saying ‘Seriously, how much money do you want for it?’, “ she said.
Soon afterwards, her work caught the eye of artist and gallery owner Maggie MacAndrews.
Maggie read about Sara’s donation of Blood Stained Poppies in the local press last November.
Maggie said: “I’ve been very interested in Sara since I read her story and I am delighted to finally work with her to help sell Blood Stained Poppies.
“She’s a great talent and I think her work and her story are both very inspirational and will uplift everyone who comes to the gallery.”
The Pilgrim Bandits raise funds for taking injured members on adventure and confidence building expeditions.
A launch event for Sara’s exhibition has taken place at The Mac Gallery and her collection will now be on display in the South Parade gallery until September 2.
