CRAWLS, slaloms, swimming and tree climbing - Crowle’s Alan Rayment could well be taking on his toughest challenge yet.

Bilateral amputee Alan (37) is competing in the 10km Tough Guy race, which is described as the “safest most dangerous event in the world”.

Alan, who is the Fitness Suite Manager at North Lindsey College in Scunthorpe, has spent many years pushing himself to the limit, racing for Team GB in triathlon at national, European and World events, completing the London Marathon and hand cycling 1,000 miles from Land’s End to John O’ Groats.

Alan is in a wheelchair having had both legs amputated in 1997 due to leg ulcers and MRSA.

He will tackle the Muddy Battlefield Endurance Experience on Sunday October 14 and will be helped along by a team of ten who will assist over the obstacles.

“This will be the ultimate challenge and will push me to the limit physically and mentally,” Alan told the Bells/Advertiser.

“This will show the world what you can achieve if you really set your mind to it.”

He said his team were working on ideas as to how to transport him over the difficult stretches of the course, and so far have come up with pulling him round on a sledge or on a builders sack or using a harness system.

Channel 4 have expressed an interest in filming the event.

“The course takes you 40 foot in the air, and there are 500m ropes to climb, tree structures, slaloms, crawls, 200m swimming, I will do all that myself and the team will help me when there is something I can’t physically do.

“We just want to complete it.

“It’s going to be absolutely amazing.”

He added: “The guys from Tough Guys (the organisers) have contacted me to say ‘you’re amazing’ and that it will be a massive achievement for me.

“If anyone wants to come and join us on the challenge they are welcome, the more the merrier.”
